Hawkins Open Spaces recently completed work on the Te Wero Island and Eastern Viaduct Enhancement project – a key part of the waterfront festivities for the Rugby World Cup. Located within the Viaduct Basin and providing pedestrian access to the new Wynyard Crossing, carrying out construction activities required high levels of coordination.
Comprehensive stakeholder liaison was carried out with adjacent contractors, local business operators and wharf users to programme work so as to minimise disruption in the area. With constrained timeframes, it was essential to maintain work to the construction programme and forward plan for procurement, taking into account weather and site restrictions.
The scope of works included demolition, removal and reclamation of existing materials onsite, remedial works to paving and asphalt, supply and installation of road markings and resin coatings, installation of new lighting, street furniture and large tree planters, installation of an area synthetic turf and remedial works to the Bascule bridge.
The works were carried out within the coastal marine environment and in some areas over water, bringing unique challenges to environmental management. HS&E was managed under a site specific plan, in accordance with Waterfront Auckland and Hawkins’ policies and systems.
Hawkins met all programme, budget and quality objectives agreed with the client and have enjoyed the opportunity to create a unique public space for the Auckland community.
