Papakura Station Redevelopment: On track for the future

Papakura train station is the third busiest station in Auckland after Britomart and Newmarket. Every day more than 2,000 people use it. In 2012, KiwiRail funded a significant upgrade as part of the Auckland Electrification Project and to provide resiliency for suburban and freight trains heading south.

They engaged Hawkins to carry out this work, requiring us to undertake all project tasks next to a live rail line and an operational station. We had keep to a tight time frame in order to complete this project on schedule.


KiwiRail’s aim:

  • To improve passenger experience and transport efficiency.

What we did:

Our brief was to:

  • construct over 500 metres of new platform and the associated shelters and walkways
  • lift the existing heritage station from the island platform onto the newly expanded roadside platform
  • refurbish the platform to meet the client’s requirements
  • construct a new bus interchange.

This included:

  • establishing the site
  • demolition work
  • refurbishing the historical station including roofing, drainage and excavation,
  • constructing a retaining wall
  • forming a new track
  • piling
  • installing shelters, canopies and mechanical, electrical, fire, data and communication services and utilities.

Because the station is located in the heart of a busy commercial area, we developed and implemented a stakeholder management plan to ensure local bodies faced minimal disruption.

In order to meet stakeholder requirements we worked nights, implemented a noise management plan and completed any vibration works after hours.

Our project team tried to involve the local community in the station’s redevelopment. For example, 180 pupils from Papakura Central Primary School visited the site.

Unique challenges:

  • Ongoing changes were made to the design of the project to meet client requirements. We worked collaboratively with KiwiRail and its designer to provide timely and cost-effective solutions.
  • Many changes were made to the scope of works. We worked closely with our sub-contractors, suppliers, the rail infrastructure team and Veolia, the operators of the station, at short notice in order to accommodate the changes.
  • Working next to a live line and an operational train station was a challenge. A lot of coordination was involved to find the best times to work with minimal disruption.

The outcome:

As a result of extensive planning and collaboration of all involved, all milestones were met. The platforms were fully functional on the original completion date set by the client.

Papakura train station is able to function as an interchange for diesel shuttle trains to and from Pukekohe, and has a dedicated freight line. It offers a better passenger experience as a result of its optimised track and platform layout.
