Project Kingfish

Air New Zealand's Project Kingfish, was an ambitious project that set out to revolutionise and improve the domestic traveller’s check-in experience throughout 26 domestic airports across New Zealand. The super-fast-track 6-month project saw Hawkins contracted to install and fit out architecturally designed self service check-in kiosks that incorporated the latest mobile and barcode technology and baggage platform systems while maintaining full operations.

The project was part of an overall strategy that aimed to improve the check-in experience for New Zealand travellers travelling with Air New Zealand by virtually eliminating queues that arise as part of the normal check-in desk system. Air New Zealand selected Hawkins as the main contractor at an early stage of design based on an established relationship and our extensive knowledge of the different airports.

Construction of each location was intensely micro-managed despite little opportunity for front end planning due to the time constraints. Project stages were detailed and carefully thought out and activities were mapped out on a daily basis. As each airport was different, there were always things that had to be changed, and this represented a unique project where flexibility and nimbleness were a key requisite of success.

Much work could be done at night or in daytime windows but Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch were the most challenging. Health and safety was of the utmost priority to both Hawkins and Air New Zealand, as the construction was being carried out whilst the airports continued to be fully operational. The clear site establishment protocols resulted in an exemplary health and safety record.

The project was delivered successfully and has led to Hawkins working with Air New Zealand again in rolling out a trial of a similar system at the Auckland international terminal for trans-Tasman flights.
