Kawerau Geothermal Power Plant Opening
In November 2008, Hawkins staff joined partners Sumitomo Corporation and Fuji Electric Systems for the official opening of Mighty River Power’s Kawerau geothermal power station – the largest geothermal power project to be undertaken in New Zealand for some twenty years and the fastest ever built.
At the opening, Mighty River Power CEO Doug Heffernan congratulated the team on achieving the ‘Triple Crown’: completion six weeks ahead of schedule, under budget and producing higher than specified power output.
Mangawhai Eco Care project.
In December 2007 Hawkins Infrastructure was awarded the contract to build the sewer reticulation and pump stations for the Mangawhai Eco Care project.
Mangawhai, located 1½ hours drive north of Auckland, is a fast growing sea side town with a high holiday population. This town does not have a reticulated sewerage system and the environment is being put at risk as during the summer months raw sewage has been recorded flowing in the open drains.
Hawkins contract is for the construction of approximately 21km of reticulation sewers, 6.5km of small diameter rising mains and the associated 283 house hold grinder pump stations, 6.0km of internal rising mains, ten pumping stations, 11.5km of transfer main.
When the project is completed Mangawhai will benefit from a modern sewerage reticulation system that will enable this sea side community to continue to grow in an environmentally sustainable manner.
The reticulation work involves constructing sewers either through the road reserve or through private property. The level of public interface requires Hawkins to have a high level of supervision of the project to ensure that this interface is managed correctly.
